The Death of Gene Hackman

When the news of Gene Hackman’s death hit the media on February 26 it was not a surprise. After all he was 95 years old with heart disease and advanced Alzheimer’s. The shock and confusion centered on the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Hackman, his 64-year-old wife Betsy Arakawa and one of their three dogs.  

The death announcement arrived at the onset of the spring eclipse season which began on the New Moon of 9.41° Pisces on February 27th. Eclipse energy ebbs and flows in the following way: the New Moon of February 27th starts to rev up more fated events that build up to the Lunar Eclipse on March 14th at 23.57° Virgo, followed by the peak energy of the two weeks between the Lunar Eclipse and the Solar Eclipse on March 29th at 9.00 Aries, and slowly winding down in the following two weeks ending on the next full moon on April 12th at 23.20° Libra.   

Eclipses turn life upside down and topsy-turvy like the disruption and chaos caused by a Uranus transit. There is more electricity in the air.  People are excitable, irrational, irritable because things shake up and become more uncontrollable.  One can short-circuit if the new electrical current and information cannot be incorporated and adapted to the old wiring of the physical, mental and emotional body.  In extreme cases death happens to those that cannot handle the new, higher wattage coming down from the heavens.  Eclipses act like gateways for fated events, ideas, and people leaving and entering our lives. They represent passages of time. Famous people that were leaders and pioneers in their professional field die with more frequency during eclipse season and Gene Hackman is a perfect example of this. His was a legendary career that began in the late 1960s and endured with continued success until his retirement in 2005. He was a titan in the film industry and respected universally by peers and public alike. He won two Oscars; the first in 1972 for THE FRENCH CONNECTION and the second in 1993 for UNFORGIVEN and was the recipient of many other prestigious awards and honors. He starred in countless other classics covering a wide variety of genres including BONNIE AND CLYDE, I NEVER SANG FOR MY FATHER, THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, THE CONVERSATION, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, SUPERMAN, HOOSIERS, NO WAY OUT, MISSISSIPPI BURNING, THE BIRDCAGE, and THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS.

The first thing that stands out in the natal chart is the Aquarius and Capricorn stelliums with the final dispositor of the chart being a dignified Saturn in Capricorn by sign and house placement (the 11th aptly named the house of good spirit and one of the most beneficial in the 360° wheel). The Sun, Moon, Venus and Ascendant all in Aquarius along with Saturn, Mercury and Mars in Capricorn make him the ultimate Saturnine man.  He became known as a professional of the highest order, stood the test of time and died an institution and legend with an unparalleled legacy.  As a true Aquarian he carved out his own unique path that contradicted a more traditional trajectory of the classically handsome leading man.  He had an A-list career without looking like the “typical Hollywood leading man”.   

He made a difference in the collective and world at large with the preponderance of planets being in houses eleven and twelve.  He was also a man whose identity was very much concerned with straddling an existence between two worlds: the mundane material world mixed with the ethereal world.  His Aquarius planets reside in the same sign as the ascendant but on the 12th house side.  He was someone who could enter the house of imagination, imprisonment and magical worlds and ground it through his physical body and persona in the earth-bound world of the 1st house.  

Actors need a certain amount of luck combined with talent and ambition.  Luck he has by being born on the direct station of Jupiter (just like Donald Trump).  The areas of life influenced by Jupiter are the 4th house (home and family), MC (career and reputation), 11th (friends, groups and connections), and 2nd (money, possessions and talent).  Though debilitated by sign, Jupiter is powerful sitting on an angle (IC), being in its own bounds, and trining the Aquarius stellium in the 12th.   

His chart ruler and most important planet, Saturn, forms an earth grand trine with Neptune and a tight Chiron/North Node conjunction, is dignified by sign and house placement as well as sitting in the bounds of Jupiter (benefic by sect). Saturn in Capricorn, the final dispositor of the chart, is the most elevated, being closest to the MC. Saturn square Uranus keeps any overly rebellious or revolutionary quality in check.  He constantly struggles between fitting in and remaining true to his unique vision.     

Much more can be said but let’s proceed to the circumstances of the death and what current transits, progressions, time lords and eclipses reveal.  

Death of Gene Hackman 
The sad story has been reported in several media sources.  The following encapsulation is taken verbatim from his Wikipedia page which condenses the events based upon autopsy findings and studying tracking devices of the couples recorded last whereabouts.    

“In the final months of his life, Hackman's neighbors in Santa Fe, New Mexico, noticed that his health appeared to be declining, and he and Arakawa ceased communicating with family and friends. Arakawa was last seen alive at a CVS Pharmacy on February 11, 2025, and returned to their gated community at 5:15 pm. On February 12, 2025, Arakawa called a physician, who runs a private health clinic in Santa Fe, and made an appointment for that afternoon — but did not show up. Arakawa died in their home a short time later from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Hackman did not seek help; authorities believed he was unable to comprehend her death due to his Alzheimer's. Hackman died in the home around February 18, at which point his pacemaker recorded an abnormal rhythm.  The cause of death was severe heart disease, complicated by advanced Alzheimer's disease and kidney disease. 

On February 26, the bodies of Hackman, Arakawa, and one of their three dogs were found. Two of the couple's dogs were found alive in the home.   The discovery was made after a maintenance worker, concerned that the couple had not answered the door, called security for help. Security personnel saw the bodies through a window and alerted authorities. Although foul play was not suspected, the deaths were deemed suspicious enough to warrant an investigation.  Carbon monoxide poisoning was ruled out on February 28. The causes of death were announced at a press conference on March 7.  

On Feb. 9, Arakawa picked up Zinna, a reddish Australian Kelpie mix, at a veterinary hospital after she had undergone “a major surgery”.  The hospital's staff had told Arakawa to confine Zinna to a crate to keep her from running around following surgery.   Arakawa’s sudden death before releasing the dog and Hackman’s inability to grasp the situation unfortunately led to the dog dying of starvation and dehydration.”  By all accounts she was an excellent dog owner and caretaker.   

Transits at the time of Death 
Hackman had recently turned 95 on January 29, 2025.  Using the ancient technique of sect and time lords that places him in a 12th house profection year making Saturn (the malefic of sect in a day chart) the most important planet of the year.  Common 12th house themes he would be dealing with this year are illness, pain, suffering imprisonment, health matters, end of life matters, karma, imagination, loneliness, retreat, spirituality.  For a 95-year-old man suffering from severe Alzheimer’s disease and other maladies it wouldn’t be a wrong assumption to think this would be a year to face end of life matters in a more final way.  Saturn rules the end of time, old age, and the breakdown of the body.  It plays a major role in how the year rolls out by being the activated time lord of the 12th house of long spiritual journeys to the other side.     

As mentioned earlier, the deaths were reported on February 26th within a day of the Pisces New Moon at 9° 41’ ushering in the 6-week eclipse energy. This degree sits in his 1st house (physical body) and makes a tight square to the MC/IC axis (reputation/home).    

The lunar eclipse of March 14th at 23° 57’ Virgo is on the cusp of the 7th and 8th houses incorporating 8th house themes of death and 7th house themes of partnership.  He and his wife both died.  The Virgo/Pisces axis emphasizes health matters as well as pets.   

The solar eclipse of March 29th at 9° 00’ Aries conjuncts natal Uranus.  That colors the story in terms of shocking revelations and the unexpected and odd nature of the situation.  In addition, 9° Aries squares natal Saturn, the recently activated lord of the 12th house as well as the Aquarian 1st house (the physical body).  Saturn rules old age and the end of time. The houses represented by endings and beginnings are in Saturn’s control.  

The eclipse degree also accentuates the natal MC/IC axis by trine and sextile which puts him and his past in the spotlight.   

The retrograde transits of Mercury and Venus occur simultaneously and cross natal Uranus and Saturn three times by conjunction and square respectively while simultaneously forming a trine and sextile to the MC/IC axis.  Transits to and from Saturn will be more powerful this year since he is the profected lord.  Uranus may take a second seat to Saturn, but they are connected by square aspect in the natal chart so transits to one always affects the other.   

Saturn in Pisces surprisingly makes no harsh transits (only a trine to Pluto) but just the fact that both Saturn and Neptune are traveling at the last degrees of Pisces before entering Aries indicates wiping a slate clean from the old-world order (of which he is highly representative) to make way for the new world order and vision of Aries.  Importantly transiting Venus (the spouse) conjuncts transiting Saturn during her retrograde three times: January 18 at 16.05 Pisces, April 7 at 25.15 Pisces and April 24 at 27.13 Pisces.  His wife plays a very important role in this story.  Saturn transiting the end of his first house is the grim reaper setting time limits on the physical body.  The solar eclipse squaring this planet cannot be underestimated when it’s the time lord for the year.  By connecting houses one and twelve through rulership, the themes of straddling two worlds and being on a precipice for a major ending and new beginning are strong.   

He is having a Jupiter return in the 4th house.  Jupiter is the planet of long-distance journeys, and its return in the 4th has something interesting to say regarding the “womb to the tomb” imagery associated with this house.   

Transiting Mars had just stationed direct after a long retrograde and conjuncted natal Pluto within days of discovering the bodies.  Mars/Pluto connections can manifest in violent, danger and other harmful and nefarious ways.  Transiting Uranus trine natal Mercury/Mars reveals the shocking nature and lurid details of the events leading to the death of Hackman and his wife.   

Transiting Uranus is approaching a conjunction/opposition to the nonagesimal IC/MC axis and a square to the Asc/Dsc axis. Nonagesimal means on the 90th degree from the ascendant placing it at the zenith, therefore using equal houses it makes the cusp of the 10th the zenith point at 27.19° Scorpio with a timed floating MC at 9.45° Sagittarius.  He is inevitably on a path where Uranus is about to rock his entire world as it hits the angles which are points of action.  On the day of discovering the bodies transiting Uranus is in a very tight trine to natal Mars (a rather shocking, volatile and explosive pairing).

With all the Mars/Pluto/Uranus involved (the progressions will back this up) one can see why the investigation could not initially rule out foul play or carbon monoxide poisoning.   

Let me add that the simultaneous transits of Saturn and Neptune at the final degrees of Pisces (the last sign of the Zodiac) soon to enter Aries in April and May, (the first sign of the Zodiac), are about the disappearance and fading away into the collective past the standards and traditions of the old guard that have served their time well.  The slate is being wiped clean for a new vision of the future and the birth of a new world order.   

PROGRESSIONS 
Hackman’s progressions are active for February 26, 2025: 

Progressed ascendant in close sextile to natal Neptune is the body and spirit evaporating from physical form.  Neptune sits in the house of marriage and his wife was part of the dissolution of his life.  

Progressed Mercury squares natal Neptune indicating the Alzheimer’s and loss of mental clarity at the time of his death.  There is a riddle to this story that needs to be figured out.    It would also indicate a weakness or illness with the wife.  It must have been a very sad time of bewilderment, confusion and total non-comprehension during the last week of his life with his wife lying dead in the other room.  Perhaps this progression kept him in happy oblivion to the drama unfolding all around him much like an infant child that has no awareness of what’s really going on in their surroundings, until lack of food and drink took its toll.  It is a sad ending no matter how you look at it.   

He has a natal Sun/Chiron square.  By progression Chiron and the Sun closely conjunct at 14° Taurus indicating something about physical wounds, healing and caretaking. 

Progressed Venus is in partile conjunction to natal Jupiter.  A seemingly benefic progression indicating that he is surrounded by love and the support of his spouse.  This is his second marriage, so Arakawa is represented by his 9th house ruled by Venus.  His second wife (Venus as ruler of 9th) is deeply connected with going on this long spiritual journey (death) with him.  There is something rather beautiful in the connection even though it involves the death of two people.  Remember, transiting Jupiter is also triggering this powerful progression.   

Progressed Mars conjuncts natal Uranus.  A shocking pairing descriptive of the bizarre nature of the deaths.  Both planets are being triggered by the solar eclipse on March 29th at 9° Aries. Mars rules the 10th and 3rd house so the shocking news comes to light before the public and there’s much talk and discussion about his legacy, career and reputation.   

SOLAR RETURN CHART 2025 (cast using the natal location).   
I love studying a solar return chart of the year for added insight and this one does not disappoint.  There is a repetition of his natal Sun/Moon conjunction in Aquarius only this year in the 11th house of his colleagues and peers who will undoubtedly be celebrating his life throughout the year.  28° Pisces rising with Neptune on the Ascendant represents the dissolution of the physical body. It is the penultimate zodiacal degree rising of the last sign of the zodiac - something about his life is coming to an end this year.  This is more fated and karmic with the transiting nodes crossing this axis at 29° Pisces/Virgo.  There is a release and letting go from the material world into the world of spirit.  I would interpret his natal new moon placement in the 12th house as representing great hidden potential at birth.  The solar return mirroring the same natal aspect but now in the 11th house is that natal potential having been fully realized.  His legacy and reputation will be valued and celebrated throughout the year by his professional community and groups dedicated to honoring that legacy.  He has earned the public’s love and charity. 

The solar return falls on the day Uranus stationed direct and that colors the year with shocking and unusual revelations.  Let’s see if there are any more bizarre discoveries about this story that are played out during 2025.  There may be something unusual about his money and how he shares his inheritance.  Perhaps the Uranus station with all the 11th house Aquarius planets represents most of his estate and fortune going to charity and humanitarian causes. 

Pisces rises therefore Jupiter is the chart ruler.  The 11th house placements of Pluto, Mercury, Sun and Moon in Aquarius all trine Jupiter.  That makes for a lovely transitional journey and ensures enduring love and respect by humanity.     

Wishing Mr. and Mrs. Hackman a peaceful journey to the other side.  He certainly leaves behind a legacy and reputation that anyone would be proud of.  A life well lived.  ​
